MSSU Jazz Collective performing at William Penn’s McGrew Fine Arts Center

02/26/2018

The Missouri Southern State University Jazz Collective will be performing at William Penn University’s McGrew Fine Arts Center on Tuesday, February 27 at 12:00 PM.

Missouri Southern State University is located in Joplin, Missouri and is part of the State of Missouri’s university system with over 6,000 students enrolled.  The university features and promotes an International Mission which includes both bringing international culture and experiences to the campus as well as offering students the opportunity to study abroad.

The MSSU Jazz Collective is one of four University Jazz Combos directed by Iowa native and Director of Jazz Studies Dr. Phillip C. Wise.  MSSU jazz groups have recently performed in British Columbia and Alberta, Canada and in Tortola, British Virgin Islands as part of jazz concert series. The university also features the Southern Jazz Orchestra, a traditional 18-piece big band.

Director of Vocal and Keyboard Music and the Humanities Division Chair, Professor Anita Meinert says, “It is wonderful that Phil is bringing his combo to play for our students! A live performance is a better teacher than any lecture or DVD could ever be.”

This Iowa tour marks a return home of sorts, as Dr. Wise is a William Penn University graduate, class of 1982. Their Iowa tour will take them to southeast Iowa and northeast Missouri area high schools and colleges.
