A Partnership Rooted in Service

Throughout their years in Oskaloosa, John and Diane Ottosson have shared a commitment to serving William Penn University and the surrounding community. While John has dedicated his career to the University, Diane has established her own legacy of service through professional leadership, volunteerism, and community involvement.
When the couple returned to Oskaloosa in 1990, Diane felt a personal calling to serve. While pursuing her bachelor’s degree at William Penn, she began organizing professional development opportunities for home child care providers. She later served as Executive Director of Mahaska County United Way and Director of Marketing and Communication at William Penn.
Her commitment to the community has also included nearly 25 years with the Kiwanis Club of Oskaloosa, service on the Oskaloosa City Council, and leadership with Fine Arts and Cultural Events (FACE) of Mahaska County, where she has helped support the growth of public art initiatives.
Diane’s approach to service is reflected in a Chinese proverb she shared: “Flowers leave some of their fragrance in the hand that bestows them.”
She explained, “In other words, when we help others we help ourselves. And while we don’t serve in anticipation of something in return, I believe it is a natural outcome. When we care about others it shows in the little things we do, and sometimes those things that seem little to us are big things to someone else.”
As John approaches retirement, the Ottossons’ shared commitment to service offers an opportunity for others to make a difference as well.
Community members and alumni are invited to join John and Diane for the Roast & Toast on April 3, 2027, an evening honoring their years of service, with proceeds supporting William Penn University student scholarships.
Supporters can also join the celebration at John’s Last Shot on October 28, 2026, when William Penn takes on Central College in a basketball rivalry game featuring a special halftime ceremony honoring President Ottosson.
Both events offer opportunities to celebrate the Ottossons’ contributions while continuing the spirit of community and service that has defined their time at Penn.
