In 2023, Cameron Ganier arrived at William Penn University after Iowa Wesleyan closed its doors. The transition wasn’t just a change in schools but a leap into the unknown. “William Penn welcomed me with open arms and allowed me to continue my education in a supportive environment,” Cameron said. For him, the university offered a place to keep moving forward academically when he needed it most.
Now a senior, Cameron is pursuing a degree in Business Management, complemented by minors in Entrepreneurship and Economics. He initially started with a general business degree but decided to shift his focus. “Business Management aligned better with my goals,” he explained, noting that his minors have given him a well-rounded understanding of leadership, innovation, and financial strategy.
The journey hasn’t always been easy. Coming from New Orleans to a small town like Oskaloosa, Cameron faced the challenge of adjusting to a new environment. “I was very shy and unsure of how I’d fit in,” he admitted. However, over time, he pushed himself to step outside his comfort zone, get involved in campus activities, and connect with others. This growth became evident during a business presentation he delivered with newfound confidence—an achievement that highlighted how far he’s come both academically and personally.
The William Penn community has played a significant role in Cameron’s development. “The most unexpected part of my experience was how quickly I felt at home,” he shared. Professors, in particular, have been instrumental in his journey. During a family emergency, their patience and understanding went beyond academics, providing Cameron with the support and guidance he needed. “It was a reminder that the William Penn community genuinely cares about its students,” he said.
Balancing academics, personal life, and social commitments has been a learning curve, but Cameron has found a system that works for him. Organization and prioritization have been key, along with carving out time for friends and self-care. Through these experiences, he’s discovered resilience he didn’t know he had. “I’ve learned that I’m far more capable than I thought. I can handle difficult situations and come out stronger,” he reflected.
Cameron’s definition of success has evolved over his time at William Penn. Initially, it was about achieving good grades, but now it encompasses personal growth, overcoming challenges, and building meaningful relationships. His advice to his freshman self? “Trust the process and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Growth happens when you step out of your comfort zone.”
Looking ahead, Cameron is equipped with the skills, confidence, and connections to thrive in his future endeavors. His journey at William Penn is a testament to the power of community, determination, and stepping into the unknown.
