Applied Technology Camp 2026

June 1 @ 8:00 am - June 4 @ 12:00 pm

Sign up now for the Applied Technology Summer Camp, running from 8:00 a.m. to noon, Monday, June 16, 2025, to Wednesday, June 18, 2025, and from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 19, 2025! This four-day camp offers an interactive, hands-on experience where students explore applied technology through problem-solving, design, and project-based learning. Participants will engage in activities such as Computer-Aided Drafting (CAD), plastic injection molding, woodworking, electronics and soldering, and engineering design.

Registration is limited to 20 participants ages 11 to 14, and the cost is $150 per student. The deadline to register is Sunday, June 8, 2025.

Camp Schedule:

Monday: Design Day

7:30 to 8:00 am
Check In
• Pick up your t-shirt and name tag
• Head to MTC 150
• Play games while everyone arrives

8:00 am to 12:00 pm

Welcome to Camp
Meet your instructors and learn what Applied Technology Camp is all about.

Ice Breaker Activity
Fun team activity to get to know everyone.

Introduction to CAD
Learn the basics of computer aided design and how engineers create digital models.

CO2 Dragster Design Challenge
• Watch a short video introduction
• Learn what makes a dragster fast
• Explore key design ideas like weight, friction, aerodynamics, and strength
• Look at sample cars and materials
• Start brainstorming and sketching your own design
• Choose how you want to design your car:

  1. Draw a two view pattern and build a foam prototype
  2. Or design your car in CAD and 3D print a prototype

Tuesday: Build and Prototype

8:00 am to 12:00 pm

Welcome Back

Manufacturing Project
Choose and build a small project such as a peg game, custom sign, or coaster set.
• Learn shop safety
• Use real tools
• Shape, sand, and build your project

Dragster Prototyping
• Use foam blanks and hot wire cutters to shape your prototype
• Receive your 3D printed model if you made one
• Test your design:

  • Visual check
  • Strength check
  • Does it meet the specifications?
  • Improve your design if needed

Dragster Body Production
• Watch how a real dragster is made
• Receive your basswood blank
• Begin cutting and shaping your official race car body


Wednesday: Finish and Detail

8:00 am to 12:00 pm

Continue Building Your Dragster
Finish shaping and sanding your car body.

Painting and Finishing
• Apply sanding sealer
• Paint your base color
• Add custom details
• Let it dry properly

Optional: Epoxy inlay for coasters if time allows.


Thursday: Final Prep and Race Day

8:00 am to 12:00 pm

Final Sanding and Paint
• Apply final coats
• Add clear top coat

Assembly Demonstration
Learn how to:
• Install axles and wheels
• Check alignment
• Perform a roll test to make sure your car runs straight and fast

Work Time
Finish building and assembling your dragster.

10:00 am to 12:00 pm
Computer Programming Activity
For campers who finish early.

12:00 to 4:00 pm
Optional Open Work Time if you need extra time to finish.


Thursday Evening: Race Night

5:00 to 6:00 pm
Contest Judging

6:00 pm
CO2 Drag Race Begins

Awards Ceremony
Awards will be presented immediately after the races.
