The sports drama film The Final Season tells the story of the town of Norway, Iowa, as it faced school closure and consolidation. The high school baseball team, which served as the identity of the community, faced the challenge of winning its 20th Iowa state baseball championship without legendary coach Jim Van Scoyoc at the helm during the final season in 1991.
Jim Van Scoyoc competed in basketball and baseball at William Penn College before beginning his teaching and coaching career. Following a two-year stint at Amana High School (IA), Van Scoyoc moved on to coach at Norway High School. During his tenure, he won 12 state baseball championships and was named the National High School Baseball Coach of the Year in 1983. Tiny Norway High School regularly defeated much larger schools in baseball and produced four major league baseball players. Van Scoyoc’s influence on Iowa baseball continues to be recognized by generations of players.
