William Penn University Announces New Graduate Degree Offering

10/07/2019

(OSKALOOSA, Iowa) – William Penn University has received approval from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) to add a second graduate study to their offerings. Beginning in January 2020, William Penn University will offer a degree in Master of Arts in Sport Management.

“A career in sport is challenging and rewarding as the industry is continually evolving and growing with new paradigms emerging daily,” Dr. Glenn Steimling, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Kinesiology at WPU. “A top-10 global industry; careers in sport are found in K—12 schools as a coach and administrator, countless capacities in collegiate and pro sports, and many others—too numerous to list.”

Steimling, known by peers as ‘Doc’, has been a Penn faculty member since 2014 and is constantly looking for ways to engage his students through sport curriculum as well as events and activities across campus. Experience gained through creating and leading events provides the critical skill necessary for a successful career in the sport management industry. ‘Doc’ incorporates these ideas in his courses, such as touring facilities in Iowa with his students and allowing student groups to act as “boutique” marketing firms developing creative plans for a sport marketing competition. Steimling will continue to head the program as a lead faculty member for students pursuing their MSM degree.

The MA in Sport Management is a 36-credit program and intended for individuals wanted to expand their knowledge and skillset in addition to their bachelor’s degree. Sport Management is a degree that focuses on the business attributes of the sports industry. Professionals with a Sport Management degree typically handle the behind-the-scenes aspects of the athletic realm such as finances, leadership, marketing, and facility or event management. Career opportunities that are available with an MA in Sport Management include, but are not limited to:

  • Athletics/Activities Director
  • Venue Manager
  • Sports Marketer
  • Event Coordinator

  • Contract Administrator
  • Along with behind-the-scenes positions!

Graduates who have earned their bachelor’s degree from William Penn University are eligible for a special Loyalty Scholarship. As a WPU graduate, you can save $100 per credit hour while you earn your master’s degree.
