Bench Grant Project

01/06/2021

William Penn has been awarded a grant from the Iowa Grocers Industry Association to purchase park benches that are made from recycled bags by Plastic Recycling of Iowa. As part of the grant, William Penn is required to match the grant challenge. Ten benches will be placed throughout campus, a few will be replacing wooden benches that have deteriorated over time.

The plastic bag program increases the number of plastic bags that are recycled. One park bench represents approximately 10,600 bags that won’t end up in the landfill. The benches are 96% recycled plastic. This program continues to encourage individuals to recycle their plastic bags.

WPU believes in the Keeping Iowa Beautiful projects and with this project we will be expanding our recycling program here on campus. Turning plastic bags into products that will be an aesthetic enhancement to our campus grounds.

Thank you to those individuals and organizations helping us meet the challenge match. Each bench will be engraved in memory of or in recognition of the individual or organization participating.
