Distance Learning Academic Advisor – Staff Position

Job Title: Distance Learning Academic Advisor

Position Summary:
The Academic Advisor reports directly to the Director of Distance Learning and assumes the assigned tasks and duties. These include, but are not limited to the academic advising of Distance Learning students.

Department: Education Division

Qualifications:

Education Bachelor’s Degree in education preferred
Experience 2-4 years of experience working with non-traditional students or adult learners preferred
Duties Advise students in Distance learning program

  • Evaluate incoming transcripts
  • Formulate Program of Study laying out their 3 year plan (include endorsement areas where applicable)
  • Handle all enrollment – add/drop
  • Communicate with students regarding academic/instructor issues
  • Be available to take questions from students about other issues – financial aid, billing, books, computers, classes, portfolio, etc.
  • Work with other on campus offices to assist DL students
  • Track student progress through each Benchmark
  • Assist students submitting Teacher Education Program and Student Teaching Applications, reviewing transcript audits.

Recruitment and Retention

  • Site visits
  • Phone calls and emails
  • Program of Study for all potential students who submit transcripts for evaluation
  • Work with Admissions to assist potential students through the application process

Collaboration

  •  Work with student and instructor to address questions and issues with Key Assignments.
  • Work with instructors to address individual student issues/field experience, etc.
  • Work with Information Services, instructors and students to ensure that all technology needs are being met
  • Work with placement coordinator to assure that correct placements are made and student teachers are ready to teach
  • Work with the Licensure Official to oversee that all coursework has been completed for the endorsements students are pursuing.
  • Update information in Moodle (licensure changes, Praxis information, TEP requirements, etc.)
  • Update/plan schedule as needed to implement changes in course curriculum/licensure
  • Attend all department meetings
  • Assist Distance Learning master schedule with the Distance Learning Director
  • Supervise student employees

Reports To: Distance Learning Director
