Sandra Kay Hendred

Sandra Kay Hendred balanced opportunities and challenges working full-time while earning her Bachelor’s in Elementary Education at William Penn University through the distance learning program. “Most of my classes were over the ICN,” she said. “That technology was all new to me as was submitting assignments and taking tests on line.” She didn’t realize it at the time, but keeping up with new ways of learning through technology was preparation for the technology she uses in her classroom now teaching at Ottumwa Community School District as an elementary ESL instructor. The technology, coupled with the small class sizes, set Sandra up for a successful career after she graduated in 2009. “I graduated fully prepared to be successful as an elementary education teacher,” she said. “I was encouraged to earn additional endorsements. Acting on that encouragement, I earned endorsements in reading and ESL which made my resume more attractive to potential employers.” Sandra said that she was amazed at the support provided by faculty and staff at William Penn. “Instructor mentorship served to keep me encouraged and looking to the future. It helped me to maintain a ‘can do’ attitude during difficult times,” she said. “The instructors at Penn demonstrated passion for their work and their desire to see me succeed. I am grateful for the guidance and support I had at Penn.”
