Congratulations 2017 Graduates!

You did it. You’ve worked hard, met your goals, and have made everlasting memories. This day is for you. We want to celebrate your accomplishments and achievements with your fellow classmates, family, and friends. This isn’t the conclusion of your experience at William Penn, it’s the beginning of a lifelong connection you will have as a Statesmen forever.

The 2017 Commencement ceremony will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, May 6, in the Penn Activity Center (PAC) on William Penn University’s Oskaloosa campus.

Doors will open at 8:30 AM

  • Intent to Graduate form and related fees are valid only for the academic year indicated and must be filed by January 30th if you are to receive an actual diploma. Online-evening (OLE-formerly CWA) students who will complete required coursework prior to August 29, 2017 should fill out this form.
  • The “No walk” information has been added to the “Intent to Graduate” form. Please inform the Registrar’s office immediately of any changes. Diplomas will be mailed to the address recorded on the “Intent to Graduate” form.
  • Cap & Gown: if you are attending classes in Oskaloosa, students may pick up regalia at the campus bookstore in Oskaloosa after April 1st. Bookstore hours are Monday – Thursday 8:30 AM – 4:00 PM, Fridays at 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM. For students at other campuses, regalia will be available for pick-up at the Clive location or as arranged with your advisor. Regalia pick-up hours for the Clive campus will be 3:00–6:00 PM every evening, April 1st until the week before graduation. Regalia can also be picked up on Fridays until 4:00 PM. Online students who live near a campus can pick up regalia. If an online student is not walking, regalia will not be sent unless specifically requested and arranged ahead of time with the advisor. If you are unable to pick up your regalia or have any questions about regalia, announcements or rings, contact Heidi Parker, Bookstore Manager, at 641-673-1031. After the Commencement ceremony, the regalia is yours to keep.
  • Campus Bookstore Hours: May 6th will be 8:30 AM – until one hour after graduation. This opportunity is for parents and students to shop on campus before and after the ceremony.
  • Honor Cords will be distributed in the gymnasiums the morning of graduation. Only students who have completed all degree requirements are eligible to wear honor cords. Honor cords will not be shipped out after the Commencement ceremony.
  • Graduation Announcements: You may order personalized graduation announcements by calling 1-800-353-5299 or Please allow 2–3 weeks for delivery.
  • Photographs: You may purchase a professional photograph taken at the moment you receive your diploma and/or hooding. The ceremony will also be videotaped and can be streamed live online. More information will be emailed to the graduate before graduation.
  • Verification of Graduation Requirements: No diplomas will be issued at graduation. Final verification of graduation requirements for May candidates will be conducted as grade reports are completed. All diplomas will be ordered and mailed after verification. For summer graduates, final verification will occur in August and September with diplomas mailed after that time. If unexpected problems arise, we will make every attempt to contact you. Please do not call the Registrar’s Office for grades or graduation status. You may check your grades by logging on to Moodle or WPU Access.
  • Your Account: All balances must be paid in full before being issued a diploma. You must complete all exit paperwork for the William Penn Loan, William Penn Forgivable Loan, and Perkins Load by April 15, 2017. If you have any questions, contact the Business Services Office at 641-673-1142.
  • Handicapped Seating: Please notify the Registrar’s Office at 641-673-1082 by April 30, 2017, if a member of your family needs special seating arrangements.
  • Visitor Information: If you have family members arriving from out of town, who may not be familiar with the Oskaloosa area, please visit the Visitor Information.

During the processional, your tassel will be worn on the right side. Men will remove their caps for the Invocation and leave them off until the “Conferring of Degrees.” Women will keep their caps on throughout the service. Men will again remove their caps for the Benediction and replace them for the Recessional. (Watch the platform party). After the Board of Trustees member announces that the degree is conferred, you may shift your tassel to the left.

You will be asked to rise at appropriate times during the ceremony. Please remain standing until given the signal to be seated. At the conclusion of the ceremony remain standing for the Recessional. The convener and platform party leave first, followed by the honored guests and faculty. Graduates then follow as directed by the Junior Marshals.

  • Parking – Please take North Market (Highway 63) to R Avenue West (north of Atkins Memorial Union), and drive west on R Avenue West to parking on the west side of the PAC.
  • Graduates assemble for the procession – 9:00 am Traditional campus, Nursing and Distance Learning will assemble in the Lower Gym. Line-up alphabetically within Academic Divisions. The tassel is worn on the right. Only WPU academic honor cords may be worn during the ceremony. Online-Evening (OLE-formerly CWA) graduates will need to be lined up in the upper gym. Family members traveling with students coming from greater distance may travel with the graduate and wait in the PAC for the ceremony to start.
  • Commencement begins at 10:00 am.

  • The PAC will close at 1:00 pm following the ceremony.
  • Seating is not reserved but is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Doors open at 8:30 am.
  • Please dress professionally and appropriately.
  • Ceremony Broadcast! The ceremony will be broadcast later by Mahaska Communications Group on MCG Channel 12. Please refer to for specific dates and times.

Immediately following Commencement, graduates will recess to the front lawn of Penn Hall where the Alumni Association will lead you in the Blue and Gold Ceremony. This William Penn tradition launches our graduates off into the world, holding on to a piece of history. In case of rain, the Blue and Gold Ceremony will be held on the PAC turf.

August Graduates

Upon completion of all remaining requirements, August graduates will receive their diplomas (qualified candidates) in the mail.  Diplomas are ordered after all final requirements are met.
