The Foyer Gallery in the Wilcox Library at William Penn University is featuring the paintings and sculpture of husband and wife Matt Kargol and Sarah Kargol until November 4. The show includes large metal sculptures and multi-textured collage style paintings with a monster or superhuman theme.
Matt graduated from Oskaloosa High School in 1994, received a Bachelor of Arts, Art Ed (Sculpture emphasis) in1997 from the University of Northern Iowa, a Master of Arts in Sculpture in 2005 from the University of Northern Iowa and a Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture from Clemson University. He is now is an Assistant Professor of Art at Northern State University in Aberdeen, South Dakota. Sarah received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Northern Iowa in 2000 and now focuses entirely on creating her art and taking care of her four young boys. They have both exhibited extensively throughout the Midwest. Matt has won many awards including a Best of Show Award at the Iowa State Fair in 1997 and has also completed many commissioned pieces. Sarah does commissioned murals as well as paintings.
Sarah says this about her monster paintings: “I am entrenched in everything little boy. From the mischief to the cartoons shows... the common everyday is full of wonder and amusement. I am inspired by almost everything I see. Although I owe the monster series idea's conception to my four children, there are monster qualities in everyone. Some are quite entertaining or pathetic... but others are down right frightening!” Sarah's work manifests itself through a wonderful blend of fantastic and traditional subject matter revealing to the viewer the connection we all share with our imaginations.
A reception will be held at the Foyer Gallery at William Penn University on November 4th from 2-4 p.m. with both Matt and Sarah in attendance. Refreshments will be served and it will be a wonderful time to talk with both artists about their processes and inspiration.
The Foyer Gallery is open during regular Wilcox Library hours.
