The music department of William Penn University will present a concert featuring the university Wind Ensemble and Chamber Singers on Monday, March 17, 2008, at 7:30 pm in the Chief Mahaska Room of Atkins Memorial Student Union.
The Wind Ensemble is making its return to campus after a several year hiatus. Comprised of Penn students, members of the Oskaloosa Municipal Band and high school students from Oskaloosa and North Mahaska Schools, the nearly 35 member group will perform works from wind band including Shostakovich’s “Folk Dances” Sousa’s “Gallant Seventh March” and “Second Suite in F for Military Band" by Gustav Holst. Lighter selections will feature Dixieland: Front and Center which showcases a smaller Dixieland style band with the ensemble, Big Band Cavalcade, which was arranged by Oskaloosa’s own Andy Clark and Karl King’s “Walking Frog”.
The concert will also feature the conducting premier of Penn students LaShay Garrett, Sarra Abbott and Trish Clark.
The program will conclude as the Wind Ensemble and Chamber Singers combine to perform Nick Glennie-Smith’s composition “The Mansions of The Lord” from the motion picture “We Were Soldiers”.
The William Penn University Wind Ensemble is under the direction of Professor Scott Cressley. Professor Anita Meinert, director of vocal/keyboard music, directs the Chamber Singers.
The concert is free and open to the public.
