Canned food drive scheduled for Saturday to help those in need

It is always important to give thanks and be grateful for the gifts one receives. As the holiday season approaches, William Penn students need your help to give to those in need. Freshman honor society Alpha Lambda Delta and theatre honor society Alpha Psi Omega will conduct a canned food drive in the Oskaloosa community on Saturday, November 15, from 9:00 a.m. to noon. Students will travel door to door in Oskaloosa asking for canned food donations. There will also be drop-off sites at Fareway and Hy-Vee. Donations received will be given to Crisis Intervention Services and Church Women United Ecumenical Cupboard. Items which can be donated include: canned food, toilet paper, shampoo and soap.
“Thanksgiving and Christmas are fast approaching and the pantry is bare. In this time of lay-offs and economic uncertainty, please help Penn students collect food for the food pantry and women’s shelter.  Your gift of food will help stop hunger and will give hope to others,” said Dr. Ann Fields, advisor to Alpha Lambda Delta.
The fall canned food drive is a yearly tradition for the honor societies, and helps educate students on the importance of giving back to their community. Throughout the week members of the William Penn community have also been making donations for this cause.
William Penn senior and vice president of Penn’s chapter of Alpha Lambda Delta, Cesar Villarreal, encourages people to give, noting it’s time to follow in the footsteps of others who have offered a helping hand.
“There are people out there without the warmth of clothing, and even without a simple meal inside a can of food,” he said.
