William Penn University is pleased to announce the addition of a music education major to its program offerings. Anita Meinert, director of vocal and keyboard music at William Penn, said the program developed naturally. 
      “We have had the classes in place for a number of years, so it was a matter of putting the package together,” Meinert said. “Students with this degree are in demand in the state of Iowa, and their chance of attaining employment is great. We are very excited to once again be part of the wonderful teacher education program at William Penn.”
      Course work required for the new endorsement includes piano/keyboard or class piano; Music Theory I and II; Arts and Society I, history of music, conducting, ear training/sight singing; communications seminar/senior recital; concentrated study in primary instrument/voice; technical preparation in secondary instrument families. Students enrolled in the music education major will also participate in university performance ensembles which may include William Penn’s Jazz Ensemble, pep band, William Penn Singers (concert choir), Chamber Singers and concert band. 
      Instructor/Director of Instrumental Music, Scott Cressley believes the new major will be another opportunity for Penn students to learn valuable leadership skills.
      “The addition of the music education endorsement will highlight Penn’s ability to produce leaders for the classrooms of the future. Our curriculum will give students the necessary and complete education and practical experience to become outstanding professionals,” Cressley said.
