Athletic Hall of Fame Inductees 1987-1991

CHARLES BAINBRIDGE    Inducted 1987

YEARS: 1937-1941  Four year letterman in football, basketball and track. Named all-conference three times. Co-captain in 1940.

CHESTER CHASE     Inducted 1987

YEARS: 1927-1931  Four-year letterman in football, basketball and track. Played offensive and defensive
tackle. Led unbeaten 1930 team defense that stopped opponents 18 times inside the five yard line.

CHUCK HENRY     Inducted  1987

YEARS: 1962-1966  Power running halfback named all-conference three years. Named NAIA All-Regional. As high school coach guided Sigourney to state championship.

JIM VAN SCOYOC  Inducted 1987

YEARS: 1961-1965  Four time letterman in basketball and baseball. All-conference in both sports and named conference MVP in baseball in 1965. Named National High School Baseball Coach of Year in 1983; Iowa Coach of Year three times.

MARK VAN VOORHIS    Inducted 1987

YEARS: 1924-1928  Four time letterman in football, basketball  and track. Named all-conference three times and was captain of 1926 team.

STEVE BURTON     Inducted 1988

YEARS: 1963-1967  Four-time letterman in basketball. All-Conference three times; all-district twice.
Scored 1,590 career points included 49 against Judson (66-67). Solid rebounder.

EDWARD CRISS     Inducted 1988

YEARS: 1934-1938  Letterman in football, basketball and baseball. Recognized as outstanding
high school coach. His New Sharon football team had 33 game win streak and girls basketball went to state three
times. High overall record 450 wins-152 losses.

SIMON HESTER      Inducted 1988

YEARS: 1894-1898  A double threat halfback for his running and drop kicking ability. Set school hurdle records in track. Was first paid football coach at William Penn .

BILL KILDOW           Inducted 1988

YEARS: 1956-1959 Earned 11 letters in football, basketball, golf and baseball. Scored 1,154 career points in basketball and was ranked in NAIA free throw percentage two years. Deadly outside shooter and deadly at free throw line.

HOWARD STUTZMAN    Inducted 1988

YEARS: 1931-1935 Earned 11 letters in football, basketball and track. Among Iowa Conference in basketball scoring leaders all four years. Set school high jump record. Received three distinguished awards from Iowa High School Athletic Association.

LUCIUS ASHBY           Inducted 1989

Quarterback in football he provided the 1920-23 game winning dropkick field goal in three games and winning dropkick extra point three times plus the winning TD run twice.

EARL CRAVEN              Inducted 1989

YEARS: 1958-1962  Became head football coach in 1958 and produced first winning team (7-2) in 28-years. Credited as one of the leaders in reestablished Penn athletics. Had a 26 –18-2 mark.

AMBROSE DOLLER          Inducted 1989

YEARS: 1937-1941  Earned 11 letters in three sports. Conference champion in 100 and high jump he also competed in the decathlon and was a member of the 880-yard relay team that finished third in the Drake Relays.

WILLIAM E. SWIM        Inducted 1989

YEARS: 1924-1928  Four time letterman in both football and track. Played in every varsity football game
for four years as halfback/quarterback. Was a sprinter in track and on the 40-yard relay team that placed at Drake
and the Kansas Relays.
 
JULIE WOOD           Inducted 1989

YEARS: 1977-1981  Four time letter winner as a catcher on IowaConference championship teams that twice
qualified for the national tournament. Named conference MVP twice.

TED BURSON           Inducted 1990

YEARS: 1959-1963 Four-time basketball letterman, he set school records in rebounding for game, season and career.  Is a member of William Penn’s1,000 point plus club in career scoring with 1,559 points. Also lettered in track as a high jumper.

GEORGE ‘JIMMY’ QUIRE    Inducted 1990

YEARS: 1925-1929  Four-time letterman in both football, basketball and baseball.  Talented on the football field, he is listed in the record booksfor run from scrimmage, td pass interception, td kickoff return and td pass reception. Held school basketball scoring record for eight years. Coached  1956-57 Penn basketball team.

BRUCE POLEN       Inducted 1990

YEARS: 1969-1973  All-conference and all-regional as defensive back,  he was drafted by NFL and was on the Kansas City Chiefs and Oakland Raiders squads. Set records for interceptions and fumble recoveries. Also lettered in baseball.

KARLA VAN HAL              Inducted 1990

YEARS: 1976-1980  Top pitcher in Iowa Conference she guided her team to two national playoff berths. Set school records in wins, strikeouts, and ERA.

RICHARD ‘RIC’ WILSON    Inducted 1990

YEARS: 1970-1972  Lefthanded pitcher had four no-hitters and an always consistently low ERA. Named to the Outstanding Athletes of America in 1971.

JOE ROGERS           Inducted 1991

YEARS: 1930-1935 Lettered four times in three sports. In track won the 100 and 220 in the Iowa State meet, anchored record setting 880 relay team that finished second in a national meet in Chicago. Dangerous break away runner in football.

GLENDA POOCK SUCKOW       Inducted 1991

YEARS: 1975-1979 First team All-American in 1979. Set records for scoring in game, season, career and ended with 2077 points. Led Penn to two national tournaments. Named to Iowa Girls’ Basketball Hall of Fame.

HIRIM ‘HI’ COVEY        Inducted 1991

YEARS: 1926-1930 Lettered four times in both football and track. Renowned high school track coach his Ames teams won 18 state championships, 20 conference titles and he had a 143-33 dual record. A member of high school track coaches Hall of Fame.

GAREY WOOD           Inducted 1991

YEARS: 1975-1979  Member of 1979 national wrestling team at Penn. Lettered four-times at 159-lbs, was three-time qualifier for national and twice an All-American.

PERCY ‘BUDDY’ WHITE    Inducted 1991

YEARS: 1964-1968  Multi-talented football player lettered four times, named all-conference twice and all-district twice. Was a defensive halfback, high scoring offensive back, place kicker and returned kickoffs. Member of Penn’s 100 points play career scoring club.
