Athletic Hall of Fame Inductees 1985 to 1986

JOHN BELL       Charter Member 1985

Years: 1930-1934  Four time All-Iowa Conference in football; played on undefeated
1930 team. Also excelled in baseball and track.

LESLIE “BUD” BOLLMAN       Charter Member 1985

YEARS: 1928-1932  Four time lettermen in football, basketball and track. Halfback unbeaten 1930 football team.

GEORGE AVON COVEY          Charter Member 1985

YEARS: 1927-1931 Captain, quarterback and all conference during unbeaten 1930 season. Lettered
four times in football, basketball and  track.
 
GERALD GALLAGHER          Charter Member 1985

YEARS: 1929-1933  Lettered four times as guard on football team. Played on unbeaten 1930 team; was captain of 1932 squad.

CHARLES E. HAWORTH          Charter Member  1985

YEARS: 1921-1925 World class distance runner. Ran as a member of U.S. team in Amsterdam Olympics in 1928.

HAROLD ‘SCRUBBY’ NEISWANGER        Charter Member 1985

YEARS:1919-1923  Four time football lettermen; excellent open field runner. Could play all positions
and once started at defensive tackle. Also lettered in basketball.

ETHEL MCKIBBEN JESUP       Charter Member 1985

YEARS: 1917-1921 Captain on unbeaten 1920 basketball team. One of founders of the Women’s
Athletic Association and a first pioneer in women’s athletics at William Penn.

ERIC OTTO        Charter Member 1985

YEARS: 1967-1971  First team All-conference, all-district twice in basketball. First Iowa collegiate to score 2,000 career points. Four time letterman. Conference  MVP.

WILBUR YOUNG        Charter member 1985

YEARS: 1967-1971  First team all-conference tackle twice. NAIA All-America in 1970. Played in College All-Star game in Chicago. Drafted by Kansas City Chiefs, he played 14-years in NFL. Also lettered and set record in shot put in track.

JOHN ASK        Charter Member 1986

YEARS: 1942-46  Lettered in basketball, track and baseball. Specialized in outside shooting and solid defense in basketball. Coached state championship teams in track/cross county at Cedar Rapids Jefferson High School.

LAWRENCE AULD        Charter Member 1986

YEARS: 1923-1927  Distinguished distance runner in track and cross country. Broke conference record in mile and two-mile as a freshman, then broke both records each year he competed. Finished 6th in NCAA mile in 1927. Invited to Olympic trials.

JACK BOENDER       Charter Member 1986

YEARS: 1958-1961  William Penn’s first football All-American, achieved in 1960. As a power running fullback he set school records in rushing and scoring and was among the nation’s NAIA leaders all three seasons.

GAIL WILHOIT MARTIN        Charter Member 1986

YEARS: 1916-1920  Leading scorer for undefeated women’s basketball team in 1920. Was one of founders of the Women’s Athletic Association and a pioneer in women’s athletics at William Penn.

JOHN MCCORMICK       Charter Member 1986

YEARS: 1932-36  Earned twelve letters competing in football, basketball, track, tennis and baseball. Led
conference in scoring his senior year and was a first team selection.

JANIS IRBY NEWLAND       Charter Member 1986

YEARS: 1973-76  First William Penn women athlete in achieve All-American honors. As team’s top scorer and rebounder she led the team to three national tournaments.

JOHN OUTLAND        Charter Member 1986

YEARS: 1891-1892  Member of first William Penn football team in 1891. Captained the team in 1892 scoring 32 of team’s 36 points. Transferred to medical school at University of Pennsylvania where he was a two-time All-American. The Outland Trophy awarded annually to the nation’s top collegiate linemen was named in his honor.

JACK OXENREIDER       Charter Member 1986

YEARS: 1943-1947 First Iowa collegiate to score 1,000 career points in basketball. Four time all-conference selection and twice conference Most Valuable Player. Led conference in scoring twice.

RON RANDLEMAN        Charter Member 1986

YEARS: 1960-1964  All-conference quarterback and twice team captain While competing in football, basketball, baseball and track. Became head football coach in 1969 and guided team to three post-season games, won three conference championships, three time conference coach of year, 1981 NAIA Coach of Year. His 51-17-1 record is best in school history.

ED WRIGHT        Charter Member 1986

YEARS: 1916-20  Captained football and basketball teams. Noted For drop kicking ability. Head coach in football, basketball, track and baseball beginning in 1930. Called “the Wonder-Man of the Iowa Conference” by the Des Moines Register after Penn went undefeated in 1930, giving up one TD in the first half of the first game, then finished the season unscored upon.
