Music

Welcome to the music department of William Penn University! We are a vibrant and growing area of the William Penn campus that is built on a history of a quality music education. Throughout the years, music has been an integral segment of campus life. From pep band to vocal soloists, it would be a difficult task to find a campus activity that does not include our department. The versatility of the performing ensembles lends themselves to almost any program need, on campus or in the community. Our theory and studio classes prepare students for either a future education in music or their own personal enrichment. jazz_combo.jpgWe take pride in our department's ability to give students an individualized education, focusing on their strengths and encouraging creativity. Our motto has always been "Think outside of the box"!

Instrumental performing ensembles include the pep band and jazz band. The pep band is the musical encouragement at all home football games, playing traditional tunes of the 60's and 70's. Alumni and community members alike join students in this lively ensemble. The jazz band plays a wide variety of styles, from swing to rock to bebop to samba. They have even been known to dress in the style of the music for their concerts to give their performance additional flair.

Vocal ensembles include the William Penn Singers, a large chorale group, Chamber ensemble, and "Penn"tatonic, a jazz ensemble. Soloists are also used to front the jazz band or perform alone. Vocalists are involved in a wide variety of activities, from campus ministries to National Anthem performances. A production in musical theater is performed on a regular basis and includes both vocalists and choir.jpginstrumentalists. Visits to area high schools , church groups, and civic organizations are also a part of music department's busy performing schedule.

To enhance your music education, classes in music theory, ear training, sight singing, conducting, and history are offered. With today's ever changing electronics, classes in composition are taught in our computer lab using the computer program Sibellius and synthesizers. Students can then take their original compositions to be digitally recorded in our studio. No piano skills are needed to create beautiful music, just your own imagination! If, however, you want to take up the piano or guitar, classes are offered in both a class setting or privately.

As you can see, the music department at William Penn is a busy place. We welcome all talents and abilities to our side of campus, no matter the level of accomplishment. There is room at our music stand for all!
