Biology Major

William Penn's biology major lets students "dig in" to whatever emphasis they choose. You might do fieldwork at an environmental site near Oskaloosa or go on a biology field trip to the mountains of Colorado. The choices . . . and opportunities . . . are yours.

With a biology major, you choose from one of four emphases:

  • Environmental Studies provides you with an increased understanding and awareness about the interactions of humans and other organisms with their environment. You'll prepare for a career in a governmental environment agency, a park, or with an environmental research firm.
  • The Pre-Professional emphasis includes courses dealing with the functions of humans and other organisms at the cellular and molecular levels. You'll prepare for further education in medicine, dentistry, optometry, veterinary science, physical therapy, and other health and life science occupations. It's also for students who want careers in industrial or academic laboratory biological research or in biotechnology.
  • The Bio-Process Technology emphasis will give you the opportunity to gain knowledge needed for employment in various fermentation industries.
  • If your goals include teaching, Penn's Science Education emphasis will prepare you with endorsements in elementary, middle, or high school education.
